Cervical Instability
After a Whiplash, accident, fall, blow or even under general anesthesia, the structures that hold and move the head can become overstretched or even torn.
The result is a changed proprioception (self-perception) and thus increased Muscle tension. The trauma can reduce blood flow and venous drainage of the head. The function of the cranial nerves, which are responsible for sensory perception, balance and much more, can be impaired.
Possible symptoms after a whiplash injury include:
Headache and neck pain
Chronic fatigue, sleep disorders
Vertigo, especially dizziness (lightheadedness, "drunken feeling")
Visual disturbances, tinnitus
Depression, anxiety attacks with racing heart
Lack of fever reactions to infections
Food intolerances and irritable bowel syndrome
A careful anamnesis and manual examination unveals the unstable cervical spine. Stabilizing exercises can then be learned and the appropriate sleeping position can be discussed. Specific manual and osteopathic techniques help to relieve pain and improve mobility. Cervical spine sufferers also often lack micronutrients such as Vit B12, which should definitely be substituted in order to alleviate the symptoms.
